What advantages does a former president has in securing their party’s nomination for the presidency?

Former President Donald Trump has a lead over Florida Governor Ron DeSantis in head-to-head matchups polls of 2024 Republican presidential primary. A FiveThirtyEight poll shows Trump receiving 49.3 percent of the national vote and DeSantis receiving 26.2 percent.

Former Presidents Run for Presidency

Before Donald Trump’s run for president in 2024, several predecessors has do so in history. Grover Cleveland was the the only U.S. president to serve two non-consecutive terms, from 1885 to 1889 and from 1893 to 1897. Cleveland won the presidency in 1892 after losing his bid for re-election four years earlier. He did attempt to run for president for a third time in 1896. At the time, he was the nominee of the Democratic Party, but he was defeated by Republican candidate William McKinley in the general election.

Another exampe is Teddy Roosevelt, who attempted to run for the presidency as a third-party candidate in 1912. After serving as president from 1901 to 1909, Roosevelt initially decided not to run for a third term in 1908, and instead supported the candidacy…
